Every last little kiss…

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

We’re striving towards a big target of 40,000 lip prints needed to set a new Guinness World Record TM and a couple of lip prints received today from two sisters from Sheffield in the UK are a really valuable addition to the collection of blue lip prints starting to stack up around the world.

We’d like to say a special thank you to both Emily (aged 9) and Lucy (aged 5) who took the time with family to print their entry forms from the PuckerUp4PH site so they could contribute their kisses to celebrate the life of their Mum.

We’ve seen some great events already take place, where whole PH associations and support groups have managed to band together with some stunning and inspiring results.  But with the way that the PH community is spread around the world, in many places, the contribution of individuals who take the time to make their own lip print and who perhaps get a few family members and friends to do the same will be key to achieving this ambitious goal.

Others like Jenny Leafe in Leicester are getting those around them involved in their own way.  Jenny last week got her friends and family to don the blue lipstick at a barbeque, with some great photos resulting.

Puckering Up in Cornwall and Marche, Italy

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Margaret Williams of Cornwall recently joined PHA-UK after being diagnosed with PH and, like many others, has found a lack of awareness and understanding of the condition all too common, “they only seem to hear the word ‘Hypertension’ and assume wrongly, that I just have high blood pressure!”

This Friday just past, Margaret organised a stand at her regular day centre where she collected kisses and passed on information about PH, helped out by her husband who was on hand to warn off those thinking they might get to kiss the lovely Margaret instead of one of our entry forms.  Staff at the centre have encouraged them to put up posters advertising PuckerUp4PH and to leave behind entry forms and information so they can carry on getting the locals to pucker up throughout the campaign!

Margaret also has plans to take the campaign to Scotland in the coming months whilst attending the National Camping and Carvanning Rally and enlisting the help of the brass band she plays in to boost the number of lip prints gathered.

Meanwhile, back in the Marche region of Italy, Tiziana and Simone Franceschini are carrying on their PuckerUp4PH activities in memory of their little daughter Sofia who we spoke of back at the start of this year’s campaign.  Their latest event took place on the 17th of this month at a fashion show at the Foro Annonario a semicircular Neoclassical marketplace in the centre of Senigalia in the Marche region of Italy.

Viagra Vixens Return To Where It All Began…

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

As many followers of the PuckerUp4PH campaign know, Northamptonshire based mother of two, Jacqui Boldy and her affectionately labelled PH friends ‘The Viagra Vixens’ (so named after the treatment that three out of the four PH friends take for their condition)  kicked off the Global PuckerUp4PH campaign in 2009 assisted by their fantastic husbands and families at the Newlands Shopping Centre in Kettering.

Each of the four, namely Deborah Saltern, Michelle Marshall, Kerry Jackson and Jacqui, share their PH stories via a series of slide shows on the PuckerUp4PH site.  The ladies first met at a support group meeting at Papworth Hospital, one of the eight specialist centres for PH in the UK and very quickly became firm friends.  Not only are they immensely supportive of each other, they’re tireless supporters of the wider PH community and together with their families are determined to do as much as they can to let people know about the condition.

On Saturday the 17th of July, undeterred by illness, Jacqui and her fabulous friends together with their respective families, set up once again in the indoor shopping centre to get the good folk of Kettering to PuckerUp4PH.  Not only did they collect hundreds of blue kisses, they also raised a considerable amount of money for the Pulmonary Hypertension Association UK.

You’ve Got To Pick A Pucker Or Two…

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

A huge thank you to the cast of the London production of Oliver who have sent us blue lip prints and photographs backstage of them doing the deed whilst still in costume with Steven Hartley, who plays Bill Sikes, leaving a beard print along with his blue lip print!

We know from the emails and letters we have recieved what the support of members of some of the finest theatre productions in the world means to people living with PH. A very big thank you on behalf of everyone in the PH community for your support.

Much appreciation also for all those at BBC Radio 2 who took part – your kisses and fabulous photos arrived with us in the office today!

Talking of huge thanks…the winner of the ‘lips of 2010′ Luz Batista Santiago whose perfect pout appears on all campaign materials..has with the support of her fellow PH-ers, family, friends, co-workers and colleagues been leading from the front. Luz and her team has been spreading word about the initiative and collecting kisses across the Carribean and beyond. People in Puerto Rico have been magnificent in their support of the campaign and we know will make a sizeable contribution to the final tally of lip prints.

We look forward to sharing with you details of the fantastic efforts of our friends in North and South of Italy in the coming days..Ciao to all across that fine country!

The support for PuckerUp4PH continues in Israel with a pool party, supported by one of PHA Israel’s local corporate sponsors contributing over 200 lip prints. Keep in touch with PHA Israel’s website to see details.

We hear things are about to get busy in New Zealand and are very much looking forward to your involvement with the campaign.

Blue Lip Fever Spreads Across Puerto Rico!

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

The Puerto Rican PH Support Group, Grupo de Apoyo para Pacientes de Hipertensión Pulmonar en Puerto Rico (GAPHPPR) have been working again to take the PH message to the population.  Their story is best told in the words of the lovely Luz Batista-Santiago herself:

“The ‘blue lips’ fever has continued to spread all over the island.  Last Friday, July 9, it was caught by the employees and visitors of the subsidiaries of Popular Inc., Popular Mortgage and Popular Auto, and the Mortgage Servicing Division.  A total of 357 lip prints were collected during the event that had to be extended from the two hours planned to almost four hours.  Participants had to make a line in order to show their support to co-workers Gisela Rodríguez, who passed away last year as a consequence of PH, and Luz Batista.  In addition, they received information about the condition.

The same day, lip prints were also collected from the children of a summer camp and the employees of AT&T.  With the five weeks of the campaign so far, the GAPHPPR officially have 1,383 lip prints accounted for.  To this figure we must include the prints that have been individually gathered by the members of the group.  Therefore, we believe that we must be near 2,000 prints collected.”

Well done!!!  It seems the imagination and the drive of this group are taking Puerto Rico to the forefront of the campaign again!  I hope everyone else takes on the challenge – every single kiss collected in any country in the world contributes to this huge challenge of defeating the Guinness World RecordTM and creates the opportunity to speak about PH with everyone around you.

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Every day is different with PuckerUp4PH we got in to the office this morning to find a huge surge in web visits from Brazil…and India!!..Amazing as we don’t think that the materials for the initiative have made it through Brazilian customs yet!! India is a new friend of the campaign as are the goodly PH community in Poland. Not part of the associations taking part, but keeping in touch with developments.

On behalf of PuckerUp4PH member organisations we’d like to thank every corporate sponsor/supporter who is helping to stage events and get the message out there on a local level ….Notably..we’d like to say thanks to NeoPharm of Israel, all the wonderful organisations in Brisbane/Australia (especially the pharmacist who weighed in with all the Blue Zinc…we hear Australian men are not that keen on wearing blue lipstick!!)… we’d like to acknowledge all the PH specialists in Singapore, Puerto Rico and Canada for getting involved with PuckerUp4PH in their part of the world. Hello and thank you to all the Bayer, Pfizer, Actelion and United Therapeutics people who are doing what they can in their regions to assist local groups.

Thanks to the vagueries of international couriers agents/officialdom we still have materials waiting to be distributed to our supporters in Mexico & Brazil..some of the Canadian materials have now, thankfully become available to the groups who are involved right across that fine country…and not a moment too soon!! 40,000 lip prints is a mighty total to collect..and we haven’t made it to 10,000 yet.. …

Our international co-ordinator Elizabeth Hinchey is on the case sorting the remaining parcels out..and if anyone can..Liz can!!….(she herself will be completing a tri-athlon in August in Blue Lips)

We had news from our German friends earlier this week and learnt that Bayer, who have been so brilliant in their support for PuckerUp4PH are doing a special day at their HQ to assist…A huge thank you also to Actelion, Pfizer and United Therapeutics..who we hope will also get as many of their staff to lend their lips to what we are trying to acheive.

News reached us last night that Scottish contender for the Lips of 2010, Nicola McCulloch has been gathering interest..a blue lip lingerie party was apparently a great success!!..local schools and employers to Nicola are also getting involved in the world record attempt.

We’ve seen a rise in requests for lip packs this week..many thanks to the friends and family of Jenny Leafe who are on the case in Loughborough and throughout Leicestershire gathering as many prints as they can..and we’d like to say a big thank you to keen Cornwall based Caravaner & PH-er Margaret Williams..who is spreading the word amongst her communities.

Regala Un Beso Azul in Puerto Rico

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Luz Batista-Santiago of the Grupo de Apoyo para Pacientes de Hipertensión Pulmonar en Puerto Rico (Support Group for Pulmonary Hypertension Patients in Puerto Rico or SGPHPPR) took an early lead in last year’s poll to find the ‘Lips of 2010′ from all those who had submitted photos to the PuckerUp4PH photo gallery, eventually securing victory and lending her lips for the creation of the Blue Lips logo that is fronting this year’s campaign.

This year Luz and SGPHPPR are proving no less ambitious in taking their message to the PR population, already having staged several PuckerUp4PH events & adding an impressive number of blue kisses to the attempt on the current Guinness World Record TM.

Back on the 5th & 6th of June the determined group held a PuckerUp4PH rally at the largest shopping centre in San Juan, the Plaza Las Américas in which 20 volunteers from the group took shifts to man the stall for a total of 17hours of face-to-face time with the shoppers!

In addition to securing this fabulous opportunity to speak publicly about PH, the group distributed informational flyers and managed to collect 634 blue kisses!!! What a sensational start to the campaign!

This past Tuesday, SGPHPPR joined with other PH groups around the world in celebrating the anniversary of the launch of the global PuckerUp4PH campaign with another rally held at the Hospital Auxilio Mutuo.  Over the course of 6 hours they collected kisses from employees, doctors, nurses, patients, and visitors and educated them about PH all whilst gathering another 300 lip prints towards the Guinness World RecordTM!

SGPHPPR have also launched a major media campaign with the Puerto Rican press and are far from done yet in their planned attack on smashing this record so check back for more news soon!

PH Israel’s Kissing Wall in Tel Aviv Attracts Celebrity ‘Air Kisses’

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Despite a sweltering 33°C heat, PHA Israel’s creative take on the PuckerUp4PH campaign took off  on the 6th of July with celebrity guests and passers-by invited to apply blue lipstick, kiss their forms and then display them on a large Kissing Wall erected on a central boulevard in Tel Aviv.  With the term “Pucker Up” not translating easily into Hebrew, PHA Israel is using a clever play on words that roughly equates to “a kiss for a breath of air” in promoting the campaign.

The event by all accounts was a success and a great deal of fun attracting participants from as far away as Jerusalem, and collecting in excess of 300 blue kisses!  A host of school children in town on holiday were also greatly excited to take part in the event and, cleverly, as their blue lipped photos are to be posted on the organisation’s Facebook page, the PH message will get passed on even further when they log on to show their families and friends!

PHA Israel also ensured their message was reaching a much wider audience by advertising in newspapers prior to the event and securing additional tv coverage on the day which captured the attendance of special guests including the Israeli stars Uri Gottlieb, Shira Farber and Ido Tadmor all proud to do their bit to help raise awareness of PH and publicise the campaign.

Huge congratulations go to you all in Israel, we can’t wait to hear more from you about what you’re planning next!
